Enjoyed the piece. I got some LVMH vibes. Strong designers’ say, new category creation, continuous evolution, same threat of leveraged buyouts. And looking ahead it makes me wonder about the show Severance.
The narrative made it easy to follow the breadth of information. There were multiple jumping-off points and it must have required restraint to not go off on all those tangents.
So apt that I'm sitting on an Aeron chair and typing this xD
This was a fantastic read! I worked in communications at Urban Ladder in its early years and at the time, the office had design replicas of a number of these pieces. The Eames chairs looked flimsy from a distance but were surprisingly comfortable for hours of sitting work. The Eames Lounge Chair and the Noguchi table are truly works of art. We also had a Chapman modular sofa, which wasn't as comfortable as it looked. I look back on this part of my career as a taste-making period, when I began to appreciate good design and good art for the first time. Your essay has inspired me to think about taste again.
Like Neo once he saw the code now, all I see is furniture everywhere. 😁
The Eames Lounge chair surprised me too in how comfy it was. It’s now the centrepiece of my fantasy reading room (with wall to wall bookshelves that need ladders to reach the top shelves). One can dream!
A beautiful narration - felt like a visual documentary as I read. I had heard from a friend that HermanMiller makes excellent quality chairs. They cost a bomb but employees can sit for 4 hours or more in a meeting and wouldn’t get tired. Also the company where he works hasn’t replaced the chairs bought almost 10 years ago.

Thank you! Love Severance, I hear s2 is just round the corner.
Oh yeah it took a lot to not cram it full of trivia and anecdotes. It’s such a rich history!
I’m sure the hour it took to read this must’ve been quite comfortable. 😁
wow, wow! that was such an engaging read! thank you!
Thanks for reading!

Thank you! The quality is the reason there’s a thriving secondary market for HM stuff. If maintained well, it can last decades!
For company suggestion, General Electric could be an interesting company to look into
Yup, another company with a long, well documented history and a cast of colourful characters. Thanks!
